Although no longer being the national official capital, Yangon is still the largest and most commercially important city of Myanmar. Its downtown skyline is overtopped with the ‘cracking wonder’ of Shwedagon Paya, a lucent Buddhist temple attracting a large number of pilgrims from all over the world.
While authentic wooden architectures are popular in the outlying areas, most of the structures of the city center contain of brick buildings, which are generally three to four stories high. The Office of Ministers (formerly the Old Secretariat), the Law Courts, Yangon General Hospital, and the customhouse are among the old colonial structures of red brick while the Secretariat Building represents modern architecture.

Of all Southeast Asian cities, Yangon is the most exotic city where you can enjoy a leisure walk down a typical street seeing the sights showing significantly commercial and traffic signs written predominantly in local alphabet. In this city, everyone seemed to be pleased with walking barefoot both indoors and outdoors; with faces covered with sun protection cream from the natural extracts of branches of a tree known as Thanaka.
Even though decaying and beyond appreciation, Yangon which remains an almost unique example of a 19th-century British colonial capital and is famous for its colonial architecture is an embroilment of Burmese, British, Chinese as well as Indian influences. However, Yangon keeps on being a city of the past, as proofed by its longyi-wearing habitude and betel nut eating, their friendliness or even familial attitude towards tourists, its homely street vendors and its bothersome smells.

In the last ten years, Yangon has seen a strong detonation of restaurants and almost any kinds of stunning international cuisine are available including tasty Western, Italian, Korean as well as Japanese and Thai cuisines. Local cuisine performs the multiple ethnic natures of the city and the country and, together with Burmese food; there are a large amount of Indian and Chinese restaurants as well as several places major in Shan food.
