The history of Myanmar – the Golden Land
Several tribal groups migrated from neighboring lands in Myanmar in the days of earliest history. Apparently, the Mon gave this land the name Suvannabhumi meant “Golden Land”. After that, the Tibeto-Burmans came from the eastern Himalayas and the Tai moved in where southwestern China locates now. In the early of the 19th century, the British began to arrive from India. They settled in the southern region and then occupied the whole country. Until 1886, Burma or Myanmar annexed to British India.

As a result, they built “Death Railroad” with 250-mile line running through jungle and mountain terrain. This railway connected with Burma and Thailand. However, because of the shortage of metal, almost line united in the center of Malaysia.

With the help of 400 elephants and over 300,000 men who are prisoners of war and Indian and Burmese civilians, they completed the railway. Tens of thousands died while working. However, Allied bombers pounded it and then the line was abandoned and using elsewhere.
Although the British went out the fight, they came back and successful retaking the country from Japan in 1945. However, the Burmese gained their independence on January 4th, 1948. Then, the United Nations adopted a new name of this country – Myanmar.
