There are 2 options to travel from Vientiane to Chiang Mai by bus. You can choose between a direct bus from Vientiane town to Chiang Mai and another direct bus at Nong Khai. Buses running on this route are all modern, comfortable and air-conditioned. If you choose the latter one, the first thing to do is to go cross the border to Nong Khai, which is about 27 km from Vientiane and accessible by taxi, local bus ride. A 1-hour bus ride is 55baht or 15,000kip. From Nong Khai to Chiang Mai, a bus ride will cost you from USD $22-33 with the traveling time of about 12 hours. A direct bus from Vientiane to Chiang Mai with transit in Nong Khai border town in Thailand takes about 18 hours and costs $35-48 USD. At the Vientiane Central Bus station, you can catch a bus to Khon Kaen and from there, catch another one to Chiang Mai. There are 2 daily buses running on the 194km-long route from Vientiane to Khon Kaen: 07:45 AM and 02:45 PM for 50,000 kip. The traveling duration is 4 hours. A bus ride from Khon Kaen to Chiang Mai will take you 12 hours and about USD $20.

Bus tickets can be bought directly at the bus station, booked online or through a travel agent or at your hotel.
