Although he only reigned for a short period of time, Narathu is regarded as the pioneer in the establishment of the largest shrine of Bagan, the Dhammayangyi Temple, which emerges a short stroll from the bush to the southeast of the Shwesandaw. Narathu built the Dhammayangyi intending to atone for his sins having murdered his father and brother. Dhammayangyi Temple is today claimed as the most well preserved temple in Bagan, with a layout having many similarities to that of the Ananda but having a lack of the meticulous, harmonious touch of its prototype. Meanwhile, the brickwork and stonework are without equal. Tours Indochina
The floor plan of the temple inside contains of two ambulatories. However, almost all the complete innermost passage was deliberately full of brick pebble centuries ago. Three out of the four Buddha presbyterys were also built with bricks. To the west side located the remaining shrine featuring two former standing side-by-side images of Gautama and Maitreya, the historical and coming Buddhas. The synchronizing, non mortar brickwork at Dhammayangyi, highly appreciated on the higher terraces, is thought to rank as the most steady in Bagan.

Located approximately 1.5km (1 mile) down the main road to Nyaung U from the Ananda Temple, the 13th-century built Upali Thein or hall of ordination which was named after the monk Upali is one of the city’s must-see destinations. In spite of brick structure, the hall is claimed to share many similarities with many of the wooden buildings of the Bagan Era which have disappeared long time ago. The roof owns two rows of battlements and pagoda occupying its center. At the end of the 18th century, the Konbaung dynasty took many extensive renovations including re-painting the beautiful frescoes of Buddhas and Jataka stories adorning the walls.
New Bagan

Although being closer to many interesting temples, New Bagan which sprung into existence in 1990 when the government removed the village from the Old Bagan area is not as bustling as Nyaung U. The people have tried their best to make the most of their new home, with a network of shady, dusty roads far away from the river. Laid-back and friendly as it is, this city is definitely the best side of midrange accommodation and riverside restaurants in Bagan. Coming here, tourists should not miss a chance to catch an interesting glimpse into local life by coming to the morning market.
